Greywacke Marlborough Masterclass – Tuesday 27th June 2017, 7pm at Sicilian Avenue

Whisper it quietly, but New Zealand’s most celebrated winemaker is an Aussie! Though he’s probably fed up to the back teeth of being reminded of it, a third of a century ago Kevin Judd created Cloudy Bay, that most iconic of Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs, and continued to make it for 25 years. Anyone who sold wine in the late 1990s can testify to the extraordinary mania that surrounded Cloudy Bay at the time, with customers behaving like parents in search of Buzz Lightyear dolls before Christmas; going from shop to shop in the hope of finding the odd bottle.

At the same time he was putting Marlborough Sauvignon on the map, Kevin Judd was working with other varieties; particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Ironically the worldwide success of Marlborough Sauvignon that he was at the heart of probably held back the region’s emergence as a source of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; as first Martinborough and then Central Otago built their reputations for Burgundian varieties, Marlborough furiously planted more Sauvignon Blanc.

The takeover of Cloudy Bay by corporate giant LVMH provided the spur for Kevin Judd to leave and create his own label. Renting space at Dog Point, he founded Greywacke; named after the distinctive grey sandstone of the region, and has quickly established the label as one of Marlborough’s finest; not just for Sauvignon Blanc, but also for Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and, in particular, Pinot Noir.

Kevin Judd will be at Planet of the Grapes Sicilian Avenue on Tuesday the 27th of June to present a Greywacke Masterclass. Highly opinionated, laconic and always entertaining, Kevin will be showing his entire range as well as a vertical tasting of his fabulous Pinot Noir. Cheese and charcuterie will be provided, and a fine time will be had by all, as long as Kevin doesn’t get asked too many questions about Cloudy Bay….
