Our favourite Chianti estate, Fattoria di Montemaggio, is situated high on the old Roman road between Florence and Siena, and a few kilometres north of the famous town of Radda in Chianti. The name Montemaggio comes from monte maggiore; ‘big mountain’ in Italian, and with vineyards at around 600 metres, the estate is well named. In an age of rapidly rising temperatures, altitude is a valuable insurance against the heat, and few Chianti Classico estates are higher than Montemaggio.
This is very much a boutique estate; small enough for everything to be done by hand. Of the estate’s seventy hectares only eight are planted with vines; mostly Sangiovese with small plantings of Merlot, Pugnitello, Chardonnay, Malvasia Nera, and Ciliegiolo. The rest of the land is devoted to olive groves and woodland. The estate is managed by Ilaria Anichini; a native of Florence. She looks after the vineyards and the winery, whilst Andrea Paoletti who made his name at Antinori’s Tignanello estate acts as consultant winemaker.
Montemaggio owner Valeria Zavadnikova will be at Planet of the Grapes Bow Lane to present the wines from her estate alongside a specially designed four course menu. The dinner will concentrate on Chianti Classico; normale, Riserva and Gran Selezione, but will also include the estate’s Chardonnay and the 100% Merlot Torre di Montemaggio, and finish with a glass of Montemaggio Grappa. This is not an evening to miss for any lovers of all things Tuscan! The wine line up for the night is:
Chardonnay di Montemaggio 2016
Montemaggio Chianti Classico 2011
Montemaggio Chianti Classico Riserva 2004
Montemaggio Chianti Classico Riserva 2010
Montemaggio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2010
Montemaggio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2012
Torre di Montemaggio Merlot 2014
Grappa di Montemaggio
We looked forward to seeing you all for this wonderful wine dinner!
