Blank Canvas Wine Tasting at Planet of the Grapes Sicilian Avenue – Monday 7th October
Husband and wife team Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson set up Blank Canvas to fulfil their vision of creating small-batch single vineyard wines from some of the best sites in New Zealand. Matt Thomson has been making wine around the world since the early 1990s, culminating in winning the IWSC International White Winemaker of the Year award in 2008, whilst Sophie comes from a winemaking family and has given up her career in law to pursue one in wine. After years of making wines to other peoples’ specifications, Blank Canvas is entirely their own project.
Why Blank Canvas? By buying fruit from longstanding contract growers and renting space in a Marlborough winery, every vintage Matt and Sophie have a completely blank canvas to work with. The choices of varieties, vineyards, regions and winemaking facilities are theirs, so anything is possible! This philosophy extends to the winemaking; minimalist in approach, it marries New World with Old World and innovation with tradition, but is always adaptable to the conditions that year.
Matt and Sophie have certainly hit the ground running; in the four years since the first Blank Canvas wines were released, they have been showered with awards, both domestic and international, and the label is already firmly established as one of the most exciting in New Zealand.
