Our best selling wines on offer

Chateau La Croix de Grézard Lussac-Saint-Émilion 2015

Lussac-Saint-Émilion, just to the north of Saint-Émilion itself, has long been recognised as a good source of well-priced Bordeaux; so much so that the English owners of Chateau La Croix de Grézard bought the estate to provide wines for their chain of hotels. We first bought the wine for Planet of the Grapes a decade ago; the 2005 vintage, and it has been our ‘house’ Bordeaux ever since. Unlike similarly priced generic Bordeaux, Grézard has a real right-bank character and ages beautifully. Mainly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it comes from a small 9-acre vineyard ten kilometres north of the town of Saint-Émilion. 2015 is the best vintage we have tasted since the 2010 (which is still drinking well), so buy a couple of cases and lay one down for the future!

Montemaggio Chianti Classico 2013

Fattoria di Montemaggio isn’t the easiest place to get to, unless you’ve got a four-by-four. Turn off the main road by the famous Butcher’s in Panzano and follow the medieval road towards Radda-in-Chianti. The road climbs, weaves and turns to a track and, after about twenty minutes, if you haven’t taken a wrong turn, you arrive at Montemaggio. The estate’s isolated location has proved a godsend; whilst vineyards near the valley floor are becoming too warm for the Sangiovese grapes, Montemaggio, at around 600 metres, still produces wonderfully typical Chianti; all cherry fruit, palate-cleansing acidity and balsamic notes.

Despite the remote location, owner Valeria and winemaker Ilaria have turned Montemaggio into a hive of activity, with cookery courses, art classes and fashion photoshoots running alongside the more usual activities for a winery, but it is in the vineyard and winery that the greatest changes have been made; the vineyards have been converted to organic production and ancient Tuscan varieties have been planted, and the length of time the wine spends maturing in bottle has been increased. The current release, from the excellent 2013 vintage, is approaching maturity, at a time when most producers are moving on to 2017. A blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot, this is proper Chianti; a wine meant to accompany food.

Monchiero Fratelli Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2016

The small Monchiero cellar sits at the top of the famous Rocche di Castiglione slope in Barolo’s Castiglione Falletto and their Barolos are excellent, but we were just as impressed with their Barbera d’Alba. This is very much an old-style Barbera; great acidity; pure dark fruit and no new oak. The 2016 vintage is a legend in the making in Piedmont; one of the finest in living memory, and this wine demonstrates why; it shows why Barbera is more than a secondary variety in the region. From a little over one hectare of vineyard, just 6500 bottles were produced, so get it while you still can!

Magpie Estate Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache 2018

It’s now more than 25 years since Cambridge wine merchant Noel Young set up Magpie Estate with legendary Barossa winemaker Rolf Binder. The aim was to use Rolf’s extensive contacts with growers in the Barossa to provide the fruit to make good value but characterful wines that faithfully represented the region and to act as an antidote to the ocean of corporate wines claiming Barossa heritage. Things have moved on since 1993; the Barossa is awash with artisan winemakers nowadays, but few manage to produce such great value wine as this. A blend of Shiraz and Grenache; the valley’s most important varieties, this wine is a fruit-driven, warming, spicy drop that’s equally at home with a kangaroo steak or on its own.

£16.00 a bottle                 £160.00 a case of 12

Gavi Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2018

The name of Francesco Rinaldi is revered amongst lovers of traditional Barolo; their Cannubi and Brunate have long been sought after by connoisseurs, but fewer people are aware of their white wine; a Gavi made from the Cortese grape variety. It really should be better known; it is one of the best Gavi wines we have tasted, but like everything Francesco Rinaldi produce, it is in short supply. 100% Cortese and fermented in stainless steel, the wine has a classic Gavi nose of white flowers and honey, and great minerality.
