Viñedos del Contino Dinner – Tues 18th September

THE DINNER:
We’re kicking off our winter tastings with a bang and are proud to present one of Rioja’s finest producers, Viñedos del Contino into our Bow lane cellar. Join us for a night of delicious food paired with an array of exceptional wines!

THE PRODUCER:
Viñedos del Contino holds a special place in the history of Rioja. When it was created as a joint venture between the historic CVNE winery and local grape growers in 1973, it became the very first Rioja ‘Chateau’; a winery producing wine from just the estate that surrounds it. In a region where the buying in of both grapes and wine, and the blending of wines from different areas are still standard practice, this was a revolutionary and courageous development. The key to Contino’s success lies in its unique position and microclimate. Situated on the north bank of the River Ebro, in Rioja Alavesa, the 62 hectare property forms a single slope culminating in the ‘Cerro de la Mesa’; a curiously incongruous hill that protects the vineyard from the north wind, and provides them with a near-perfect exposure.

Viñedos del Contino’s signature wine is its Reserva; from the start the decision was made to only produce premium wines, and Contino Reserva is the wine on which the estate’s reputation is founded. In the forty five years since Contino’s first vintage, more ground-breaking releases have followed; a spectacular Gran Reserva, produced only in magnums; Viña de Olivo; a wine produced from the oldest plot in the vineyard, and only in great vintages, and Contino Graciano; perhaps the greatest example of this rare and much-admired native grape variety. More recently Contino have added a varietal Garnacha, a remarkable Rioja Blanco, and Contino’s first Rosado to the range.
Planet of the Grapes are delighted that Carlos, from Viñedos del Contino is coming to Bow Lane to present a range of the estate’s wines, including some older vintages, all accompanied by a specially designed five course menu.
It promises to be a stunning night!
