Founded in 1903 Finca Torremilanos is one of the oldest and most impressive of the original members; a four hundred hectare estate just to the west of the regional capital, Aranda, is planted half to vines and half to forest, with the vineyards at altitudes of between 800 and 900 metres above sea level. Here the Tinto del Pais (Rioja’s Tempranillo) takes on an altogether darker and more brooding character than in La Rioja. This is a land of extremes; baking hot summers and freezing winters, with the high daytime temperatures moderated by cool nights, and the wines reflect the climate; uncompromising and untamed.
Ricardo Peñalba’s enthusiasm and restless striving for improvement make him a fascinating host. No vintage goes by without some new experimental wine; a rare variety, an ancient plot of vines, or a concrete egg. He will be at Planet of the Grapes Bow Lane to present a range of his wines with a specially prepared four course meal, including a chance to taste the rare single vineyard ‘El Roble Viejo’ from the oldest plot on the estate.
